It was like the Chicano Literature Grammies!

I had the honor to share the stage with Sandra Cisneros and Lorna Dee Cervantes, Tony Diaz was also rocking the stage and representing the Librotraficantes.

We all read excerpts from books that were TUSD’s banned classroom reading. I wanted to read from Anzaldua’s Borderlands/ La Frontera: The New Mestiza. The day we studied her in my intro to philosophy class taught by the amazing professor Ferret at UTEP, learning about Nepantla and being in three worlds, I remember crying, feeling like someone had finally put into words what I was. Anyhow, someone beat me to the punch so I read 2 poems from Jimmy Santiago Baca’s “Black Mesa Poems”  titled “Green Chile” and “A Daily Joy to be Alive”.

It was a truly amazing night that I will never forget.

Arriba los Librotraficantes!
