
Rebelené is the chosen moniker of Zelene Suchilt (Mexico City) is an international poet and filmmaker living in New York. Winner of the 2009 Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Award from the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. Her debut poetry collection, Music for Butterflies/Música para mariposas (Editorial Ultramarina, March 2022) is available now.
In 2005, at the age of 16, she founded the annual poetry festival The Word Around Town Poetry Tour based in Houston, Texas, it ran for 10 years. She participated in the 2012 Librotraficante Caravan against the banning of Chicano literature, as “librotraficante Rebelené.” As a political organizer and human rights activist, she has contributed to different organizations and movements that work towards immigrant dignity, Black power, environmental justice, indigenous sovereignty and press freedom.
A VONA / Voices Writers Workshop 2014 fellow at the University of California Berkeley, she completed writing residencies at Doña Helen’s 2014 Fresno, California, Comadres and Compadres Writers Conference Writing Master Class The New School, New York City, and Kettle Pond Writer’s Conference 2019 Paul Smith College New York.
